What is toughened glass?
Toughened glass is glass subjected to a thermal process of heating and rapid cooling that increases its mechanical strength and its resistance to temperature changes. That is why it is the glass used in shower screens, balustrades, doors and many other installations where safety matters.
At Cristalar we work with made-to-measure toughened glass in Marbella and across the Costa del Sol. It is made to measure, with all cutting and drilling done before toughening: once toughened, it can no longer be cut or drilled. That is why we measure precisely on site before ordering each piece.
We have been installing glass in homes, residential communities and commercial premises for more than 20 years, with over 3,000 projects completed. We advise you on the thickness and finish of each piece according to how it will be used.

The order is always the same: first the glass is cut to the exact size, then the holes and edges are worked, and finally it is toughened. That is why on-site measurement is so important: each piece is made for a specific opening.

Frequently asked questions about toughened glass
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it stronger and, if it breaks, it shatters into small pieces. Laminated glass bonds two panes with an interlayer that keeps the fragments in place if it breaks. Depending on the installation we use one, the other or both together.
Can toughened glass be cut after it is made?
No. All cutting, drilling and edgework is done before toughening. That is why we measure precisely on site before ordering each piece.
What thickness do I need?
It depends on the use: a shower screen is not the same as a balustrade or a door. During the visit we tell you the right thickness and type of glass for your installation.
Can toughened glass be frosted?
Yes. As well as clear, we install frosted toughened glass, for example in terrace panels, partitions and shower screens.
